Commercial Alert

Founded in 1998 by Gary Ruskin and Ralph Nader, Commercial Alert's mission is to protect children from commercial exploitation, including the sometimes blurry distinction between advertising and editorial content on the Web. In July 2001, Commercial Alert filed a complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against eight search engines for allegedly inserting advertisements in search engine results without clearly disclosing that the ads were advertising. This letter prompted the FTC to recommend disclosure guidelines to all search engines, and prompted a follow-up investigation by Consumer Reports WebWatch.

Consumer Action (CA)

Consumer Action (CA) http://www.consumer-action.org/ CA is a non-profit advocacy and education organization specializing in multilingual consumer education in such areas as banking, insurance and HMOs. CA published in May 2001 its Special Fraud Issue, which addressed Internet fraud and how to avoid it; in March 2004, CA teamed up with credit card issuer Capitol One to launch a free online, multilingual financial education Web Site.

Consumer Federation of America (CFA)

AMIA, with more than 3,200 members worldwide, is the official U.S. representative organization to the International Medical Informatics Association. AMIA seeks to advance health care information technology and developed a set of professional etiquette and privacy guidelines to govern computer-based communications — such as e-mail exchanges — between patients and health care providers.

Consumers International (CI)

Founded in 1960, Consumers International (CI) is a worldwide non-profit federation of more than 260 consumer organizations in almost 120 countries. CI endeavors to defend the rights of all consumers, including poor, marginalized and disadvantaged people. The organization's headquarters are in London and its other offices are in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the South Pacific.

Consumers Union (CU)

CU, publisher of Consumer Reports, is an independent, non-profit testing and information organization providing advice about products and services, personal finance, health and nutrition, and other consumer concerns. Since 1936, CU’s mission has been to test products, inform the public, and protect consumers. CU's advocates testify before federal and state legislative and regulatory bodies, petition government agencies, and file lawsuits on behalf of the consumer interest. CU’s Consumer Policy Institute promotes consumer interests through research and education projects, conferences and policy papers, and comment on legislative and regulatory initiatives. CU’s advocacy offices are located in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Austin, Texas.

Internet Education Foundation

National Consumers League

The National Consumers League is America’s oldest consumer organization, representing consumers and workers on marketplace and workplace issues since our founding in 1899.
