Founded in 1994, eLab is part the Vanderbilt University Sloan Center for Internet Retailing and describes itself as the United States' first academic research center dedicated to the study of the Internet, particularly the inner workings of e-commerce. In 2001, the center launched the "Infrastructure Project" to study actual online consumer behavior, addressing such topics as Web-based business and advertising models, information privacy, and measuring users' online experience. The center is funded by the university, foundations, and individual and corporate donors, including FedEx, Lands’ End/Sears and Shop.org.

The FTC is a government agency that enforces a number of federal antitrust and consumer protection laws. One area of interest to the FTC is e-commerce and business practices on the Internet. To that end, the agency advises consumers and businesses on such topics as e-mail scams and privacy protection, and polices the Web for violators of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
National Consumer Law Center (NCLC)http://www.consumerlaw.org
NCLC promotes consumer laws on behalf of low-income and vulnerable Americans seeking economic justice. Among its interests, NCLC seeks protections for consumers in e-commerce.
The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)http://www.oecd.org/
The Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) comprises 30 member countries, each sharing a commitment to democratic government and a global market economy. More specifically, the OECD's Committee for Information, Computer and Communications Policy examines the policy infrastructure of an electronic economy, seeking to assure safety and truthful marketing practices for consumers on the Internet.
